 STUMP GRINDER

If the intended use of the cleared land is for cropland, it will be necessary to deal with any tree stumps left

after removing the trees.  If the trees have been cut down with a hydraulic saw or a hydraulic tree shear,

the top of the stumps should be very nearly at grade, or projecting no more than 1”.

Tree stumps up to 12” to 16” diameter, can be ground to 4” - 6” below grade so that the land can be planted with a “no-till” drill (planter).  Grinding the stumps like this should prevent damage to the planter. If you do not plan to do deep tillage on this land, stump grinding will be a more cost effective alternative to ripping out the stumps with a dozer or excavator. It probably will be better technique to rip out the large stumps, since many of these trees will have extensive surface roots that need to be removed.
